Yun & Lanna is a new upmarket Yunnan restaurant on the corner of Dongping and Hengshan, serving Yunnanese favorites and more in colorful and airy space. Using imported spices and seasoning from Yunnan, this authentic restaurant has already peaked the interest of foodies in Shanghai.

Geographically, Yunnan has the great fortune to be in the center of a melting pot of cultures, including ethnic minorities and its neighboring countries. While some might think Yunnan cuisine leans on being spicy, it is rather vast and varied with clear broths, sour additives and sweet fruit in the mix. The result is a memorably colorful cuisine with flavorful dishes made possible from the spices and produce native to this Shangri-La.

Yun & Lanna does much justice to its namesake, importing as much produce and seasoning as they can from Yunnan. Aside from a handful of items, it is safe to say that they do their best to achieve a most authentic dining experience in terms of flavor.

To enhance the dining experience, Yun & Lanna’s interiors mirror the colors and culture associated with the region. Azure tablecloths, patterned pillowcases, and large red lanterns brighten up the space, accompanied by quality wooden fixtures.

The entrance to the restaurant is discreet – just a small doorway on the street level marked by signage and a menu propped on a stand. Walking up the wooden flight of stairs takes you to the first level of Yun & Lanna, a modest setting compared to the main room on the top floor. However, the second floor offers the same feel of color, mood lighting of gigantic lanterns and windows that look out to the treetops.

Ascending to the third floor reveals large and airy space with open windows all around and a high pointed ceiling. During the day, it is marvelously refreshing and breezy, while at night it is dim and seductive. The space towards the back of the third floor can also seat a long table of guests that offers more privacy.

Their head chef is native to Yunnan, honing in on his expertise of more than 10 years of Yunnan cuisine, but with a few creative changes and tweaks that is somewhat seen as fusion in some of the dishes. As for their specialty dishes, the deep-fried pork ribs is one for the books – served snowed over with deep-fried spices, the ribs are fleshy, tender and juicy, the meat peeling right off the bone.

Perhaps one of the most distinctive dishes and most memorable dish is the Dali Inspired Braised Pork. The meaty chunks of pork is cooked with dried, sweetened “carved plum”, honey, and seasoning – the final outcome is a sweet and savory crowd pleaser, marbled with an oily texture that explodes in the mouth with a burst of flavor. Other meat dishes include the steamed chicken wrap and the pork belly.

As for seafood, the spicy grilled tilapia with lemongrass is a great to share, cooked to a crisp over a charcoal grill. Other seafood dishes include the soft-shell crab salad and steamed mandarin fish.

Spices and seasoning are the most important part of Yunnan cuisine. Therefore, Yun & Lanna goes the extra mile to ensure that most if not all the authentic ingredients are used and imported directly from Yunnan, including lemongrass, mint leaves, pandanus, and more.

Yun & Lanna also offers kungfu tea, using one of Yunnan’s most important produce and export, Pu’er Tea, alongside other teas. The wait staff serving the kungfu tea are very knowledgeable in regards to the temperature, preparation methods to even the exact temperature of the water being poured.

To celebrate their grand opening, Shanghai WOW! cardholders can enjoy 15% off the a la carte lunch menu and 12% off the dinner menu before October 27.
