Declaring itself the ‘first international art fair dedicated to photography in Asia-Pacific’, Photo Shanghai claims to be ‘setting a new benchmark’ for fine art photography in the region with its launch this month. While there will naturally be a strong commercial focus at this sprawling event, the fact that such a large and reputable photography fair is happening in Shanghai certainly imbues the city with a new level of art prestige.
A large variety of local and international galleries and photographers are involved – including the ATLAS Gallery from London, the A. Galerie from Paris, plus ShanghART – and the level of photography on display ought to be superb. With a professed focus on also presenting talented Chinese photographers such as Yang Fudong and Huang Xiaoliang, Photo Shanghai should be a good opportunity to discover some local gems.
